Support

How Popolo works, what to do when something goes wrong, and how to report abuse.

Reporting abuse

Open the conversation, tap the menu in the top right, and choose Report. This sends us an encrypted copy of the conversation as it currently appears. We review reports within 24 hours.

You can also write to abuse@popolo.ai.

Because messages are end-to-end encrypted, we cannot see a conversation unless someone in it reports it. Reporting from inside the app is the only way to show us what happened.

Blocking someone

Conversation menu → Block and delete. The conversation is deleted and that person has no way to reach you again. They are not told they were blocked; from their side the conversation simply goes quiet.

Common questions

I lost my phone. Can I get my conversations back?

No. Your identity lives only on that device and there is no backup, no password, and no recovery. This is the trade Popolo makes for having no account, and we would rather be clear about it than pretend otherwise.

Why did my message disappear?

Messages are deleted 24 hours after the other person opens them. If there is something you need to keep, long-press it and choose Keep. The other person is told when you keep something.

Can Popolo stop screenshots?

No, and neither can any other iPhone app — iOS provides no way to block one. Popolo tells you every time the other person takes a screenshot, and hides your conversation while the screen is being recorded. Anyone claiming to prevent screenshots on iPhone is not telling you the truth.

My invite code stopped working

Codes are single use and expire after five minutes. Make a new one.

Someone new has the same name as an existing contact

Popolo warns you and shows both figures side by side. Those figures come from the other person's key, not their name, so two different figures mean two genuinely different people — even if the name matches. That usually means someone re-paired after losing their phone. Occasionally it means someone is pretending to be them.
